Really…how much coffee does it take?

I am on my third cup this morning. I also wonder why I can’t sleep at night. hmmm.
I suppose during this part of the process I should refrain from caffeine, but where is the fun in that? This brings to mind questions as to what things other writers find necessary for their craft. Where do you write your best? Are there any rituals you go through before beginning for the day?
For reasons even I cannot fathom, I like the scent of mistletoe year round. No, I’m not kidding.  I have two or three Yankee candles that are either said scent, or pumpkin spice, that I burn when I write. Coffee is another needful thing. I have a favorite place (lake cabin), though I can only go there on the weekend. My writing room at the house takes its place during the week. It seems too that I am at my best when its late. Darkness leads to less distractions, I suppose. Everyone is asleep, and the world outside of my door is quiet. I listen to music most of the time, only refraining when I am in the outline stage of a project.
What do I listen to? Musical scores mostly, and trailer music. (Movie previews, ass…not trailor park music. You should get out more often)
So what do you do? I realize this blog is scarcely read right now, but I have to start it somewhere.

  1. I find that I do my best writing in our guest room, it’s where my husbands computer is and I can just go upstairs and shut myself in the room and write and he won’t bother me. He knows if I’m writing or editing to leave me alone! If not, I get really grouchy 😦 I usually have music playing in the background, a play list of random music that can have anything from Kelly Clarkson to Evanescence on it. And if I have a project going, I usually shut myself in the room(after my husbands left for work) check emails, blogs, whatnot and then turn on my music, open my MS word and hope that I can write that day. Lately, I’ve been wanting to write something new, but my current novel is nagging at me to be done. I’m just waiting for some more edits and then hopefully I’ll be done 🙂

  2. I used to be able to listen to TV, movies, and any kind of music… these days, for whatever reason, I need silence to work! But maybe that’s why my writing isn’t working right now. Maybe I DO need music! 🙂

  3. I’m not a coffee drinker, but I am big on chocolate and pepsi. I always read right before I write – I don’t know why and I don’t read anything in particular but I’ll sit and read for at least twenty minutes before I start writing. I guess I just try to kick start my brain.
